These compositions are made up of many small
tiles. I start with a flat sheet of wet clay. I use
many tools to press designs into it and then cut
into various sizes. When these tiles are dry, I paint
them with a refined clay slip in different colors. After
first firing I apply a black wash and wipe off to leave
the black in recessed areas, and fire again. When
done tiles are laid out on a table and after a lot of
play, like putting together a puzzle, I arrive at
a composition that works. The tiles are then
glued to a back board and are
ready for hanging.

These tiles could also be ordered without
backing to be used in tile installations.
